Win98 SE i am having trouble sharing my cable modem ever since i installed it.
NE try this in the following order
1 defrag the drive after scanning
2. Check you have the latest (98se) driver for your Video card
3. Check memory for viruses and faults
4.Or try what i try give your hard working machine a rest for two hours go for a jog come back try again from COLD BOOT

edit my problem with cable modem sharing has been solved after i enabled "Enhanced security in my Sygate software" It seems IE5. SE has built in protection for your computer and tries its best to keep intruders out"

Caution : it is better if Win98SE is installed on a CLEAN hard drive

hope it helps
