The National Post reports in its Saturday, Sept. 11, edition that
an ebola-like virus festering in a Congolese gold mine has
killed 73 people. The National Post's Briefing column reports
that a World Health Organization officials says there are dead
humans, rats and bats decomposing in the mine. The fever has
killed 73 of 88 people affected in Durba. The WHO official
says the mine should be closed. Three-quarters of the 88
suspected cases registered since November, 1998, were gold
diggers who entered the mine illegally, without protective
equipment. The mine in Durba is jointly owned by the state
Office des Mines de Kilomoto and Barrick Gold. The
Canadian mining company pulled out of the operations in
Durba when a war between Tutsi-led rebels and the
government broke out in 1998. It is unclear who would have
the authority to close down the mine.
