Telex, The Forgotten Medium, Still Very Popular December 14, 1998: 4:25 p.m. ET ANTWERP, NETHERLANDS (NB) -- By Sylvia Dennis, Newsbytes. A report just out from Unitel is billed as showing that, despite the onward and upwards surge of e-mail and fax, the good old telex machine remains as popular as ever in the specialist marketplace. The reason for this, the company says, is that telex is still the only form of data communications that can act as a legal proof in its own right in a court of law. For this reason, the report says, telex continues to enjoy a high communications profile in specialist areas such as the banking and shipping industries, for commodity trading and government relations between departments. In its research, Unitel found that many telex users have not upgraded their systems to support the Year 2000. Specifically, Unitel's research found three categories of telex users: firstly, those who have thought of the Year 2000 and telex, but who have made no arrangements yet; secondly, those who have completely forgotten the Year 2000 aspects of telex, either by themselves or by their IT services provider; and thirdly, those firm who have already made arrangements to tackle the Year 2000 issues. The research, which polled 492 companies in the Netherlands, found that, while 60 percent of banking users had made Year 2000 IT (information technology) arrangements for their telex systems, only 25 percent of shipping users had made Year 2000 arrangements. In the trading arena, meanwhile, the research found that 34 percent had made arrangements, while government staffers at 69 percent were perhaps the more wiser on Year 2000 matters. Interestingly, Unitel reports that 74 percent of the organizations which have not yet made arrangements did not know to whom they might turn for Year 2000 compliant telex systems. According to Unitel, since there are still around 1,000,000 telex users worldwide, time is running out, and a major campaign to inform telex users has recently been started by Unitel and Network Telex.
