Actually, Christopher, they have been occupied since 1967. 32 years ago, the Israelis defeated an Arab coalition and occupied the territories. I think you will find that they were established parts of Jordan and Syria for fewer years than they have been occupied by Israel.

East Timor was an established part of the Portuguese empire for over 400 years. Portugal was, in fact, at the time of the Indonesian invasion making arrangements to grant independence to almost all of its colonies.

If the world required independence prior to seizure then Namibia would not exist today. It was a former German colony (Southwest Africa) relinquished to the League of Nations after WWI and administered by South Africa by mandate. South Africa refused to relinquish control over the territory after the collapse of the League of Nations and the end of WWII. They settled people, mined the available natural resources and acted as sovereign for more than 60 years. SW Africa was part of South Africa de facto by your earlier definition and apparently had no right to object to the South African occupation because it was never independent in modern history.

Fortunately, international opinion and international law disagreed with that viewpoint and Namibia is today a free nation.
