John, this seems to be almost non-news. Why didn't Canal+ purchase Divi's new MV-45 encoder? This seems like a routine purchase by Canal+.

Official PR:
DiviCom Open Solutions Selected by Largest Direct Broadcast Satellite Provider in France
CANALSATELLITE Chooses MediaView to Transmit Digital TV to More than 1.3 Million Viewers
MILPITAS, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Sept. 13, 1999--DiviCom©, the leading provider of open solutions for digital television and a wholly owned subsidiary of C-Cube Microsystems (Nasdaq:CUBE - news), today announced its technology has been selected by CANALSATELLITE to deliver high quality television signals for France's largest direct broadcast satellite (DBS) service.

CANALSATELLITE selected the MediaView(TM) MV40 Program Encoder to maximize their digital bandwidth and provide the highest quality service to more than one million European subscribers.

In Europe, CANALSATELLITE is a leading digital satellite provider and the owner of one of the continent's largest compression centers, which broadcasts throughout France, Belgium, Switzerland and other French speaking areas. In April 1996 Canal+ was the first European pay-TV operator to pioneer digital TV over satellite by launching its subsidiary CANALSATELLITE. Today, CANALSATELLITE's subscriber base exceeds 1.3 million. Though CANALSATELLITE is a subsidiary of Canal+, Europe's largest pay-TV provider, U.S. cable giant Time Warner also has a 10 percent stake in the satellite business.

``DiviCom has a strong track record for delivering reliable solutions to our company, including the new statistical multiplexing technology,' said Guy Huquet, technical director of CANALSATELLITE. ``In addition, the open solutions from DiviCom provide us with technology that could be integrated into the existing Centre de Diffusion Numerique broadcast facility, without significant changes to other aspects of the architecture or a technology re-design.'

``Our industry leading open encoder solution adds both design flexibility and value to the CANALSATELLITE CDN broadcast facility,' said Tom Lookabaugh, president of DiviCom. ``CANALSATELLITE has pioneered some of Europe's most successful and innovative satellite services and we would like to thank them for selecting our solutions to complete their deployment.'

MediaView MV 40: Part of a Complete DTV Package

MediaView encoders are an integral part of DiviCom's complete end-to-end open solutions for digital television service providers. Whether broadcasters are delivering content over satellite, wireless, fiber or cable networks, DiviCom provides a complete set of products helping its customers decrease costs and increase their digital service offerings. DiviCom products enable re-multiplexing, data broadcasting, two-way interactive data solutions and network management capabilities.

The MV 40 marks a significant break from other program encoder solutions in its class by delivering DiviTrack(TM), its innovative ``lookahead' capability. The design of the MV40 harnesses the power of two complete compression silicon ``engines' to first analyze program data and then use the data to perform a similar, yet more refined encoding operation.

The ``lookahead' capability enables the MV40 encoder to maintain picture quality at extremely low bit rates, offering television service providers more flexibility in allocating program bandwidth. Using DiviTrack statistical multiplexing, CANALSATELLITE can offer more channels of programming while maintaining the same video quality or increasing the video quality of existing channels.

``CANALSATELLITE relies on the MV 40 solution to improve the efficiency of their digital transmission bandwidth and add more program channels,' continued Lookabaugh. ``The MV 40 is our premium standard definition (SD) solution because it offers an opportunity to generate revenue by allowing service providers to expand services and enhance quality.'

China: Local firm's VOD gains a step on Microsoft

SHENZHEN _ Microsoft's Venus Project is losing its momentum in China's market, but a locally-developed set-top box has been readied for Chinese families using a television-based VOD (video on demand) system.

The VOD set-top box would allow the families to order video and data information using their television sets.

Shanghai Bell, one of the country's leading telecom system suppliers, last week joined hands with Shenzhen DIC Information Technology Corp to co-develop a series of set-top products based on the broad-band business system (TBS).

The two companies, with a total investment of 100 million yuan (US$12.1 million), established a strategic alliance in the areas of research and development, marketing and sales.

"Our VOD system has been experimentarily used in dozens of hotels in South China, and some residential housing zones are also considering introducing them, " said Li Wei, president of Shenzhen DIC.

Users can dial up a TBS-supported server via a fixed phone line and use the set-top box to order video programmes and information services which have already been reserved in the server.

Zhao Ming, vice-president of Shanghai Bell, said DIC's system and set-top box have a huge market potential in China, and that is why his company decided to invest in it.

"The TBS system will not be limited to VOD programmes. We expect to serve long-distance education and medical services, e-commerce and data information services in the future," said Zhao.

DIC and Shanghai Bell have established a partner relationship with six research institutes and foreign companies, including Zhejiang University and Beijing Post and Telecom University, SGI, Philips and C-Cube.

The VOD system has been widely applied by hotels in Western countries, but it was not commercially available in China until now.

Industry experts said the VOD system can attract Chinese audiences because current entertainment facilities do not satisfy their demands.

A wide application of the TBS system depends on co-operation between local telecom and cable TV operators, experts said.
