jay, right, black cats and white cats, i knew i hadn't quite gotten it right, but i knew there was this thing about cats... OT funny story about deng-- last fall we were in guangzhou on a tour bus with other-- can't spell the chinese phrase, translated it means something like white ghosts or foreign demons-- guai loh maybe? anyway the tour guide was going on about deng and his reforms. she was fluent in american english (interesting, since we were so near hong kong, and she had never been to the united states) and was very familiar with american inflection and idiom--- but she kept referring to deng in present tense as though he were still alive. obviously a very revered figure even after his death. his career spanned some of the greatest events in the twentieth century and he survived all kinds of purges without turning into the kind of apparat that russian communists with similar experiences did.
