India's Microtek to Make Set Top Boxes with US, Taiwan COs
NEW DELHI, Sept 9 Asia Pulse - Indian computer peripheral
major Microtek International has forged an alliance with
US-based Rockwell and Taiwanese Winbond to manufacture set-top
boxes, which enable internet access through televisions.

Besides, the set top boxes (STBs), that enables web surfing
through television, the company will also design new modems,
switches, hubs, connectors and cables to focus on the growing
internet market, Anil Gupta, director of Microtek told PTI
here.

As per the exclusive alliance with Microtek in India, the
US$1.2 billion Rockwell and Winbond will supply chip sets and
provide know-how in the design of STBs and modems to Microtek.

Gupta said the company hoped to increase its turnover by
30 to 40 per cent during this financial year from the last
year's Rs 2,820 million leveraging from the new products and
the growing internet market in the country.

The networking products will be branded as Micronet and
expected to hit the stores across the country in six months
time, Gupta said adding that Microtek's uninterrupted power
supply (UPS) units would be in the market this month.

Microtek, the infotech arm of the Rs 12 billion footwear
major Action of group of companies will invest to the tune of
Rs 8 crore in developing new networking products.

The company has also decided to sell the STB technology to
TV and monitor manufacturing companies, who are unable to
develop the technology enabling internet surfing on their own,
he said.

Re: the price gap between rambus rdrams and sdrams continues to close ... this is grreat news for rmbs.

Whoa, now I don't fee so bad about the 95%/99% calculation switch I made earlier today.

This is disastrous news for Rambus, not good news. You want the COST gap to go down, not the PRICE gap, not now while the cost of producing Rambus is about double that of SDRAM.

Why would a memory manufacturer go the expense and risk of switching a production line over to Rambus if it can be left as an SDRAM line and produce half-again to twice as many parts that sell for the same price as the rambus parts?

Why buy new testers when the parts you can produce by just keeping the old ones will make you more money?

But don't worry, this situation isn't expected to last very long.
