Metro Optical Transport Start-up Proposes Non-WDM Transmission

Kestrel executives are undaunted by other single-wavelength optical transport
propositions because they are unproven. "We were familiar with optical CDMA,
but we rejected it, because you end up with a lot of expensive optics," says
Rowan, referring to his defense contractor days. Optical CDMA also requires
precision manufacturing, which introduces more cost, he says. The Kestrel
executives shrug off SilkRoad's (San Diego) technique as mysterious and
therefore dubious.
