Certainly vouchers would permit the ultimate freedom in school choice. But it would deny the socialist democrats an opportunity for social engineering.

I have to disagree with at least one statement you made. Public schools offer the best education you can get, provided one seeks it out. If you feel that your son gets a better education privately, fine. That is your dcision as a parent. Here's the point. People without children pay for schools. People that have never had a crime commited against them pay for police. People that are conciencious objectors pay for the military. If once we say that you only have to pay the taxes you agree with we lose a stable society. In education this gets even more dangerous. I can see a time when school voucher programs will lead us to a point when nearly all education is private with only the very poor going to delapidated public schools. Everyone should pay for our schools if only to ensure that an excellent education is provided for all members of society. You should no more be able to opt out of school taxes than you should be able to pay less taxes because you disagree with aid to Bosnia.
