B: Active Software and Virginia Community College System Team to Create
eBusiness Solution for Multi-Campus Student Information System

SANTA CLARA, Calif., Sep 13, 1999 (BUSINESS WIRE) --

ActiveWorks Integration System to Put Information and
Services at Students' and Faculty's Fingertips

Active Software, Inc. (Nasdaq:ASWX), a leading provider of eBusiness
integration software products, today announced that Virginia Community
College System (VCCS), has chosen Active Software's ActiveWorks(TM)
Integration System as an integral part of its multi-college Student
Information System (SIS) project.

The SIS will provide students, faculty, and staff with Internet access
to the information and service resources of the VCCS, a leading
academic institution of higher education with 23 colleges, located on
39 campuses throughout the Commonwealth of Virginia. Using ActiveWorks,
any student, faculty or staff member will be able to access VCCS's
information resources from any Web browser, at any campus, anytime.

"We needed an eBusiness solution in order to meet the growing demand
within our colleges to speed the delivery of information and services
to students, faculty and staff," said Larry Hengehold, vice chancellor
information technology services, Virginia Community College System.
"ActiveWorks lets us offer timely information retrieval and
self-service applications via the Web to anyone at any of our 39
campuses, increasing student and faculty satisfaction levels."

The VCCS/ActiveWorks Solution

VCCS is currently integrating ActiveWorks in two key projects. The
first ActiveWorks solution enables VCCS to integrate multiple legacy
SIS applications -- such as student registration, email, security,
directory, and library applications -- with the Internet. In November,
newly admitted students will have access to critical college services.

According to VCCS, it was able to design, implement and deploy the
ActiveWorks solution in three man-weeks -- approximately 75% faster
than if it had developed a custom integration solution. As VCCS enters
the new millennium, ActiveWorks will become the enterprise backbone for
the SIS, acting as the integration platform for linking VCCS's complete
range of financial, human resources, data warehousing and distance
education applications.

With the second solution, VCCS will convert its legacy SIS applications
to newly purchased PeopleSoft Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP)
applications without writing complex, time-consuming conversion
programs. Using ActiveWorks, VCCS expects to complete the
transformation of the legacy data into the new PeopleSoft format in
several months, eliminating approximately two to three man-years in
custom programming.

Additionally, VCCS wanted to loosely couple its new PeopleSoft ERP
applications, allowing upgrades of different versions of the PeopleSoft
modules at different times. ActiveWorks provides such flexibility,
enabling VCCS to upgrade individual applications without disrupting the
functioning of the other applications, thereby minimizing the impact on
SIS users.

VCCS Long-Term Strategy

An important part of VCCS's long-term strategy is to provide distance
education courses delivered over the Internet, utilizing real-time
data, text, audio, and video applications. "With ActiveWorks, we now
have a scalable eBusiness integration solution in place to deliver
classes anytime, anywhere, providing all Virginians access to
education." Hengehold added.

"This agreement reinforces Active Software's commitment and ability to
support the eBusiness integration needs of major organizations,
including those in education," said Jim Green, chairman and CEO, Active
Software. "Using Active Software's ActiveWorks Integration System, VCCS
is building one of the most comprehensive eBusiness integration
solutions in the industry. We expect our solution to significantly
enhance student satisfaction and expand the reach and capabilities of
the VCCS staff and faculty."

Virginia Community College System
