$Mogul,Sam Jadallah's interview with Wall Street Citytscn.com ( Sorry if this was already posted ) TA -------- 9/03/99 - Jadallah talks about new role at ICG Sep. 03, 1999 (Computer Reseller News - CMP via COMTEX) -- EDITOR'S NOTE: Sam Jadallah, former vice president of Microsoft Corp.'s Organization Consumer Unit, left the software giant after 12 years to join Internet Capital Group as a managing director. ICG, a holding company based in Wayne, Pa., seeds business-to-business Internet companies. It has invested in 39 companies so far. Jadallah recently spoke with CRN Section Editor Jerry Rosa about the move. CRN: Why did you leave Microsoft after carving out a strong career there? Sam Jadallah: I've been at Microsoft for 12 years and it was hard to make the decision to leave. But this was a great opportunity and I am seeing there is a lot of opportunity outside of Redmond. CRN: Can you describe how ICG works? Jadallah: We are a holding company for business-to-business Internet firms. We are different than a venture capital firm. Think of it as the next-generation General Electric [Co.] or Berkshire Hathaway [Inc.]. It's a holding company that is looking to grow select Internet companies looking to become No. 1 players in their marketplace. A lot of them are start-ups in the business-to-business area. CRN: What will your role be at ICG? Jadallah: As a managing director . . . once we've identified a company that we want to work with, I will work with some of those companies. I will help them with vendor relationships, strategies, whatever they need to win. We'll provide capital expertise and we have some of the best recruiters in the industry. One of the things that got me interested was the relationship with solution providers who are building network infrastructures. Many of these solution providers are independents and some have heard what we are doing and are interested in talking with us. CRN: What will you try to create of this role based on your experience at Microsoft? Jadallah: What's great about this role is I get to manage my time and spend my time adding the most value to the partner companies, and I do not have to worry about the budget process or vacation policy. I get to focus on the strategy of partnership companies. I get to help them establish their go-to-market plan, work with their sales force and the kind of channel they are trying to build. The rules are being defined right now. I built a lot of great relationships for Microsoft. I'm going to have a lot of fun. CRN: What are some of the challenges you see with dot.com fever still present? Jadallah: [ICG] is not a cash-in opportunity. The money is flowing because people believe this market is huge and I think we are at the start of the market growth. If you look at this point three to five years from now, this is just a starting point. We are at the cusp of a major transition in business. Every [chief executive] is trying to decide their Internet strategy, and that means there is a tremendous opportunity and . . . there are a lot of companies that want to cash in on this. We are not looking at the short term, but the long-term perspective. -0- Copyright 1999 CMP Media Inc.
