Datum Launches World's First Commercial
Antennaless CDMA Timing System

IRVINE, Calif. Sept. 13 /PRNewswire/ -- Datum Inc. (Nasdaq: DATM - news) today announced that it launched the world's first
commercial application of an antennaless timing solution that utilizes code division multiple access (CDMA).

Datum's patent-pending technology known as AntennaLess(TM) NetSyncPlus® is part of its OfficeTime(TM)-20 Series, which it
deployed for BTI Telecom, Incorporated (BTI) at 60 Hudson Street, New York City. BTI is an integrated telecommunications
provider servicing long-distance, local and data customers primarily in the Southeastern United States.

''The BTI installation, which has operated flawlessly, is proof that our CDMA technology will work in the most difficult
environment in a major building in an urban canyon,'' said Erik van der Kaay, President and Chief Executive Officer of Datum.
''Our AntennaLess(TM) technology reinforces our position as the leader in innovative solutions and state of the art
synchronization products.''

Timing is critical to BTI and to all telecommunications providers that demand voice quality of service that meets or exceeds the
telecommunications industry's reliability standards. Datum expects that AntennaLess(TM) NetSyncPlus® will save its customers
an average of 50 percent in synchronization costs. This wireless solution is deployed in a fraction of the time of other options, for
example the BTI installation was completed in less than two hours.

Previously, synchronization was often obtained by using a global positioning system (GPS) antenna to derive a timing signal from a
satellite. But there are many obstacles with GPS, including laborious installations and liabilities from rooftop antennas, including
leaking roofs and diminished performance due to constant exposure to environmental elements. There are also costly leasing fees
to place antennas on rooftops. In large cities, those fees can range from $500 to $1,500 per month and generally do not include
ongoing maintenance.

''Datum's CDMA product offers us a reliable, user-friendly timing solution for one of the world's most challenging
telecommunications environments,'' says David Warden, director of fiber operation for BTI. ''It is essentially a plug-and-play
application that saves BTI the installation, labor and leasing costs that are inherent with GPS systems.''

OfficeTime(TM) is designed for incumbent and competitive local exchange carriers, for corporations' customer premises
equipment (CPE) and as an embedded technology in telecommunications products. It includes a set of customer-specified
preferences for input, retiming, clock technologies, output and fail-safe systems.

Datum designs, manufactures and markets high-performance timing and frequency solutions for telecommunications, computer
networks, satellite systems, electronic commerce and test and measurement applications. Datum is the only company in the world
that supplies the full range of timing technologies. Additional information about Datum's recent breakthroughs in timing technology
is available at datum.com .

BTI is a facilities-based integrated communications provider (ICP) that has served primarily small and medium-sized business
customers in the southeastern United States since 1983. The company offers a full suite of integrated retail services to business
customers, including local, long distance, data, Internet access, paging and other enhanced services. The company also offers
wholesale services, including switched, private line, special access and prepaid calling card services to other telecommunications
carriers and end-user customers. Additional information about BTI is available on their Web site at btitele.com .

This press release contains forward-looking statements. The forward-looking statements, which reflect management's best
judgment based on factors currently known, involve a number of risks and uncertainties, including the following: customer
concentration, competition, uncertainty of intellectual property protection and uncertainty of acceptance of the Datum's products
and technology. These factors and other risks inherent in Datum's business are described from time to time in the Company's SEC
filings, including its Annual Report Form 10-K for the year ended December 31, 1998 and form 10-Q for the quarter ended June
30, 1999. Actual results may vary materially. Datum undertakes no obligation to revise the forward-looking statements contained
herein to reflect events or circumstances after the date hereof or to reflect the occurrence of unanticipated events.

SAN DIEGO (CBS.MW) -- Investors jumped screaming into Leap Wireless International's stock on Monday, sending the stock up 42 percent after an investment firm made positive comments on the wireless-communications carrier.

Shares of Leap soared 6 1/4 to 20 15/16 on volume of 2 million shares in recent trading.
