I agree 100% 9/10ths of success is motivation.

But....

If you take 10,000 successful people, more will have come from successful parents than the population at large.

ie, if 30% of the population is rich (say, family income of >$30,000 annual), then, it is likely that more than 30% of successful people come from these families.

I can vouch for this one. Of the one hundred or so associates I have from college, only 3 other ones came from families below the poverty line, like I did.

However, 17% of American's live under the poverty line.

In my firms client list, I have met less than 6 individuals from "modest" roots. Very simply, most millionaires come from wealthy parents. Not necessarialy millionaire parents, but hard working and successful parents.
