Nokia announces new range of digital cable products (Cube inside) 09:19 a.m. Sep 10, 1999 Eastern AMSTERDAM--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Sept. 10, 1999-- Nokia is displaying two set-top boxes from its latest range of digital cable products, providing access to the most exciting enhanced and interactive television services so far In the converging worlds of data communication and TV broadcasting, Nokia is offering cable companies new opportunities in end-to-end solutions such as home shopping and home banking, as well as supplying internet style services alongside TV pictures. Nokia can offer a wide range of system and terminal solutions from billing and network management systems through to wireless LAN (Local Area Network) products. Tailor made for different European markets, all models are ECCA (European Cable Communications Association) Eurobox compliant and feature, initially, a Telco modem and shortly a cable modem for full high speed return path communication via DVB-RCCL. The Nokia Mediamaster 9730 C, introduced at IBC 99, has been produced for Swedish cable operators and features the Viacess conditional access system. The Nokia Mediamaster 9760 C, introduced at the show this year, has an embedded Nagravision conditional access system as well as common interface. Nokia sees the migration towards digital cable networks as a three-stage process. The current Eurobox is fitted with an ordinary telephone-based modem, whereas a set-top box with a high speed cable modem will be required for stage two, offering a wider variety of interactive services as well as making connection much easier in the home. In the future, at stage three, Nokia sees the Multimedia cable terminal becoming a more generic interface unit in the home with access to PCs and other home equipment besides TV.
