Very good post as we can often learn by looking back at what has influenced our decisions. This one should burn deeply into our minds how readily we may become influenced by well written articles; experts that only minimally understand that about which they are writing but who must write as that is their mandate. Also, highlights the now well observed reality that it it is not easy to value growth especially in its earliest stages but that traditional measures do not work.

Good evening folks.... Are any of you followers of the Motley Fool? If so, perhaps you have read "Rule Breakers / Rule Makers".

I recently became aware of Affymetrix (when the stock was trading around 45-50, not that long ago). The technology they are involved with intrigued me. Then I read the book mentioned above and determined that AFFX is a potential rule breaker. In case you haven't figured it out, other rule breakers are companies like AMZN, YHOO, etc....

Here are the qualifications for rule breaker status:

Top dog and first mover in an important, emerging industry ... does AFFX qualify? I think so.

must possess sustainable advantage gained through business momentum, patent protection, visionaries, or inept competitors ... proved patent protection in the last few days, I don't know enough about it's competitors though. Seems to have momentum right now, sales growth appears very strong.

demonstrated strong past price appreciation ...... we've all been amazed at the recent run-up, I'm sure (99 relative strength rating in Investor's Business Daily).

strong consumer appeal..... hard for me to assess because I do not know the industry that well, someone help me here.

documented proof that it is grossly overvalued, according to the financial media .... I actually searched the web recently looking for evidence of this, and a link brought me right to that Forbes article.

I have been meaning to write this post for a while now. Today seemed like the appropriate time.... and by the way, you can buy that book at Amazon.com, it will only help one of my other investments. :)

Hang in there folks, it might be rough riding from here, but I think the odds are we will be much higher in 6 months...

Steve...

So join the party, Peter, it's still early in the game.

I think you suggested IGEN to me a while back, in response to some question I had about e-coli testing. I like what I see there, too, and I should have a few IGEN shares if my order went through today.
