[WPC99] Samsung Unveils CD-R/RW That Can Play DVD-ROM Disks
September 13, 1999 (TOKYO) -- Samsung Electronics Co., Ltd. of Korea exhibited a new CD-R/CD-WR deck called SM-304 that is capable of playing DVD-ROM disks, at the World PC Expo 99.

Samsung's unveiling of this type of DVD-ROM-compatible CD-R/CD-WR deck follows similar product announcements made in August by Ricoh Co., Ltd. and Toshiba Corp.

Both the Ricoh and Toshiba products perform playback of DVD disks at 4x normal speed, however, the Samsung model is faster, offering a playback mode that is 6x normal speed. As for its CD playback performance, Samsung's deck outperforms the other two. It offers playback at 32x normal speed, in contrast to the 24x playback speed of both the Ricoh and Toshiba versions. For writing data on either CD-R or CD-WR disks, the task is performed at 4x normal speed.

The SM-304 has an AT attachment (ATA) interface and a 2MB buffer memory. Its average access time is 110ms for DVD data and 90ms for CD data.
