There is no procedure outlined in the Constitution for secession. The theory upon which secession is based is that the Federal government has authority derived from the sovereign states. However, in the very preamble, it states:"We the people of the United States, in order to form a more perfect union...etc." Clearly, it was intended that the sovereignty be understood to reside in the people of the whole Union, and the authority of the Federal Government derived from that. Some of those involved may have held a "Southern view" of the matter, some may have been more Unionist (certainly someone like Hamilton was), but since there is no legal mechanism, and the theory allowing secession is not borne out by a "strict construction" of the text, I am happy to stand my ground.....
