Will trade a look at 3 recent (7/19, 8/4, 8/11,1999) Sol Smit Barn reports on Global Crossing for a look at this month's Gilder Tech Report. (yes, this is legal.) Please send response to: TeddyL1@excite.com ---------------------------------------- Oh, for a look at what a “visionary old doc goe” is, let's go back just over a year:Message 5552128 To: +George Gilder (653 ) From: +Teddy Thursday, Aug 20 1998 9:51PM ET Reply # of 2057 Mr. George Gilder, I am so excited about the future of the internet and am humbled that I am able to ask you a few questions directly. 1. Because I am only 14 years old, I will not be able to attend the "1998 Gilder/Forbes Telecos Conference," September 15-17, 1998 in Lake Tahoe, California. Is there any way that I could obtain a transcript of the conference? 2. I see that Joe from Qwest will be speaking there. Am I correct that you and Mr. Forbes are Qwest backers? 3. Could you please give a brief explanation of WDM vs SONET? 4. Could you please share your thoughts/ opinions of Global Crossing (GBLX): both of their business plan and of the stock as a long term investment? Thank you, Mr. George Gilder, for any answers to my specific questions and for taking the time to post on SI. ===============================Message 5614717 Subject: George Gilder - Forbes ASAP To: Teddy From: George Gilder Aug 28 1998 12:45PM EST Reply #674 of 2057 Hey, you are my son's age; you both already know everything. As you get older, you will find you know less and less. In any case, transcripts will be available after the conference to expand your realms of ignorance. Steve Forbes and I do not "back" Qwest (as far as I know, neither of us own stock in the company) but I am enthusiastic about Qwest's pioneering deployment of WDM bandwidth and think Qwest can become a major force in global telecom. WDM is wavelength division multiplexing, sending data on many colors of light down a single fiber thread. SONET is the synchronous optical network standard of the phone companies by which they reliably put tens of thousands of mostly voice 64 kilobit per second telephone circuits on a single wavelength on a fiber. SONET can run down WDM channels, but so, increasingly, can Internet Protocol(IP), so SONET is becoming redundant. The current valuation of Global Crossing seems to capture much of its potential, but I have not studied the assets closely. Certainly it is in a great longterm business. ===========================Global Crossing was added to the Telecosm List on 10-30-1999 at $14.75 (adjusted for split), the stock was $11.66 when I asked about him about it. The man is a genius. A true visionary. I must subscribe today.
