China Producing More Mobile Telecommunications Equipment Domestically
9/11/99

XIAMEN (Sept. 11) XINHUA - China will be able to manufacture more than half of the components and parts of mobile telecommunications equipment now assembled domestically by the year 2001, a Chinese
industry official said here today.

The country has taken a series of steps to encourage domestic production of telecommunications equipment, said Wang Jianzhang, vice director of the overall planning department under China's (*
Ministry of the Information Industry, ) at the ongoing Third China Fair for International Investment and Trade.

This year, the country will allocate 400 million yuan for this effort, he said.

A Motorola representative attending the fair said that China's decision to raise domestic production of this equipment conforms with the international trend of industrial division of labor.

Motorola, a major producer of mobile telecommunications equipment in China, raised its production in the country to 58.5 percent last year.

China now has more than 30 million mobile-phone users, ranking third in the world, and experts expect this figure to increase to 90 million by 2001. Enditem 11/09/99 14:45 GMT
