Carolyn, Joan, other Techriders, Answer: As close inspection of their uniforms from space walks to fix the Hubble later proved, they were being hit in the eye (and everywhere else) by cosmic particles. The flashes of light were from each time they were hit in the eye by one. That is what others in space had seen before them. That is why the flashes were not seen by crew members in the same place at the same time.
