I have run into two "telephone company" scams so far...

The first was a supposed phone survey, ostensibly requested by my provider AT&T (at the time anyway) to see if they should offer me a new service of some kind. The first few questions were routine stuff, do you receive long distance calls from overseas, how long is the call length on average, household income brackets, that kind of thing. Then, "do you anticipate moving at any point in the next month?" I had read that this is a scam that people use to target your house, the modus operandi being to pull up with a moving van and remove all your household possessions except possibly the catbox. The neighbors don't think anything of it since they probably know you are moving. So you come home to a largely empty house. I declined to answer the question. Click.

The second is one where they somehow know you are an MCI or whatever customer and they offer you some supposed "discount" on your next month's long distance bill or some such thing. And you agree to it and then they transfer you to a "verification" guy who tells you he needs certain information to "verify" the transaction. This includes your date of birth and your social security number. I refused to give this information. Click.

And yes, the 90# is, or at any rate was, valid. Although some of the companies are adding new safeguards to supply an additional layer of protection.
