Voting for the Underdog

To bolster its hardware sales, NCD developed the ThinPath software suite,
which provides local device support and load-balancing at a relatively low cost
when compared with MetaFrame. This move triggered a series of events,
among them Citrix's decision to offer Citrix Device Services, a no-cost software
solution that provides local device support for Windows terminals, without the
need to license MetaFrame. NCD countered by announcing that it would give
away its ThinPath software. NCD even offered the software to Windows
terminal vendors, but so far there have been no takers. Was NCD bold in its
decision to take on Citrix, or was it foolish? As a customer, would you be willing
to buy into the NCD solution instead of aligning yourself with Citrix?

"The NCD ThinPATH Desktop Mirror is designed to let administrators make
changes to the OS configuration, install applications from a floppy or CD-ROM
drive, conduct demonstrations and provide help in using applications. The
software will let administrators and end users simultaneously view what's on
user desktops from a remote location. It will be available this month. Pricing has
yet to be determined."
