Re: In some bios implementations a great deal of the processor can be tied up in SMI (System management Interrupts) for systems running USB peripherals and power management schemes.

That's a reasonable explanation, and could explain the test results. If the two systems had default installations of the same OS onto disks of the same size, disk activity should have been very similar, if not identical, and he reported that there appeared to be a difference in disk activity between the two systems.

Can you run some benchmarks for us and post them? Anything would be helpful. Open and close a big document in Word that has some embedded Powerpoint images from a freshly rebooted machine and time it with a watch. That should be good enough.

Dan

TigerPaw,

Re: "Message #29465 from TigerPaw at Sep 13 1999 10:49PM
Perhaps with Rambus, you need more memory?
This testimonial does not jibe at all with my own experience. With similar motherboards, one with BX and 2x AGP and the other with 820 and 4X AGP there was a noticable increase in performance for the Rambus system. In some bios implementations a great deal of the processor can be tied up in SMI (System management Interrupts) for systems running USB peripherals and power management schemes. This is an issue with new features other than Rambus."

Well can u give us a ballpark on speed increase.

Do u have latest MB and drivers.

Some folks have postulated that perhaps folks have been using early MB's or drivers. Although i find it difficult to believe that Anand and Dell don't have updated MB's and drivers and this might explain the bad results.

Some of you may recall that Tom's hardware did an early PII report andfinal silicon performed much better at intro. Recently Sharky had an early Athlon review and final results were MUCH much better on introduction.

Having said that with 2 weeks to intro I find it difficult to believe that the latest drivers etc are in such a sorry state.

regards,

Kash
