GT = "gifted and talented." Federal law mandates that GT kids get special instruction, commensurate with their abilities. Fairfax, with its enormous population of well-heeled wonks, has a great GT program. Ben and Nick are both in GT Center, starting in 3rd grade, based on scoring 150 or above on an IQ test. Anyone scoring 130 to 150 has school-based GT until either 5th or 6th grade, and then are elible for GT center. School-based GT kids study with regular kids but have enrichment classes once a week. GT center kids attend only with other GT center kids. A lot of parents try the private testing route to get the better curricula and classes. We didn't have to. (Snooty small sniff.) No kidding, it's great if you can get it.

I dunno what it's like anywhere else in the universe, but it's good here if your kids qualify. I must admit that Ben didn't get accepted into Thomas Jefferson, which is kinda like a mini-college for GT highschoolers. His grades were pretty mediocre, B+ average. So we can't really high-hat it.
