Personally, I have unshakeable faith in special providence, and believe implicitly that prayer is effective...The story that I told awhile back about the fellow who stole my wife's purse actually bears more on my conviction that God is intimately involved in the world than on the abstract belief in God. Why there is so much suffering, I cannot satisfactorily answer. But I have seen too many instances where it seemed to me that God was helping, especially after prayer, and I cannot shrug them all off as coincidence... Sometimes very pale skin "works", sometimes not, it depends on the other coloring and the skin texture. Of course, if it seems pure and even translucent, I am sure that it can be impressive....
