Ancor Signs Agreement to Provide Fibre Channel Switches For ADIC Open SAN Solutions

Need for Scalable Storage Networking Drives Decision

MINNEAPOLIS, Sept. 14 /PRNewswire/ -- Ancor Communications Inc. (Nasdaq: ANCR), the leader in proven, scalable Fibre Channel fabrics, today announced an agreement to provide its GigWorks(TM) MKII Fibre Channel eight-port switches for Advanced Digital Information Corporation's (Nasdaq: ADIC) complete storage area network (SAN) solution, called Open SAN Solutions.

"We are extremely pleased to be able to offer the Ancor Fibre Channel switches in our Open SAN Solutions package," said Bill Britts, ADIC's executive vice president of sales and marketing. "The Ancor switch's ability to create a highly scalable SAN fabric with flexible, high-bandwidth throughput is a key element in our efforts to give IT departments proven tools to handle their 100% a year data growth. The two companies are working closely to provide high performance backup solutions today with proven interoperability and a growth path to expanded SAN capabilities tomorrow."

With more than 45,000 automated tape libraries installed, ADIC is a leader in storage backup and data recovery hardware and software. Increasingly, these applications require the flexibility and gigabit-speed performance of Fibre Channel switched fabrics. Ancor switches eliminate performance bottlenecks as more devices are added to the SAN. In addition, Ancor uniquely supports a path lock-down mechanism that guarantees delivery of streaming data to tape backup devices in multiple switch environments.

Other factors involved in ADIC's decision included the high level of interoperability Ancor switches have with other SAN products, as well as switch features that help network managers quickly implement and manage a SAN, such as self-configuring ports and embedded switch management.

"ADIC's decision to use Ancor switches validates the importance of a switched fabric's ability to scale," said Carla Kennedy, Ancor's vice president of marketing. "We continue to advance our proprietary chip technology to provide customers with the most features and the fastest performance no matter how many terabytes of data are stored. We're confident ADIC customers will be excited about that kind of flexibility."

"We are excited to welcome ADIC as part of Ancor's customer base of leading storage providers," said Ken Hendrickson, Ancor's CEO. "These customers lay the groundwork for a realignment of the SAN switch market share as they ramp their business over the next few quarters."

ADIC's Open SAN solutions combine the company's FibreReady tape libraries with networking and software products from leading open-system providers of hubs, switches, adapters and cabling. Ancor is currently the exclusive provider of switches. The Open SAN solutions, including Ancor's switches, will be sold through ADIC's value-added reseller channel.

ADIC's Open SAN Solutions will be available later this month from ADIC resellers.

ADIC Delivers Open SAN Backup Solutions End-to-End SAN Solutions Combine Open-System Products with Single-Call Support

REDMOND, Wash.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Sept. 14, 1999--Advanced Digital Information Corporation (Nasdaq:ADIC) announced today the ADIC Open SAN Solutions package, a new set of Storage Area Networking (SAN) products and services that apply open system technology to data protection problems faced by IT departments.

ADIC's Open SAN Solutions combine open-system storage networking products with professional services and integrated support to deliver a comprehensive, end-to-end hardware and backup software SAN platform. The new solutions package will allow IT managers to benefit from all of the bandwidth and flexibility advantages of open-system SAN technology, with certified interoperability and single-call support. The use of open system products ensures that the solutions used today can become building blocks for the next generation of SAN applications.

"SAN solutions are here today, providing IT departments important benefits through shared storage resources and high throughput backup," commented Bill Britts, ADIC executive vice-president of Sales and Marketing. "ADIC's Open SAN approach grows out of the solutions we have helped our customers find as they consolidate their backup operations to increase data security and reduce their administrative burden using open system products. It helps IT managers implement concrete solutions today that can become part of tomorrow's expanded SAN applications."

ADIC's Open SAN Solutions support UNIX, NetWare, and Windows NT systems with a combination of scalable tape libraries, routers, hubs, switches, host-bus adapters, and cabling. Shared storage is implemented in conjunction with a variety of different certified storage management software applications. ADIC's professional services group supplies planning and installation activities, while the ADIC Technical Assistance Center and SAN systems lab provide help desk and on-site support.

ADIC's Open SAN Solutions incorporate products from leading open system providers, including Ancor, Computer Associates, Crossroads Systems, Emulex, Finisar, Legato, and VERITAS. Expansion of the list to include other industry leaders is planned. ADIC tests the certified product combinations in their SAN system labs to certify both functionality and interoperability. Open SAN Solutions also include planning and installation services and single-call support for the entire installation.

"The development of SAN technology is one of the most important network developments of the decade," explains Jonathan Otis, ADIC vice president of product management. "ADIC's Open SAN Solutions enable applications that increase bandwidth and that allow the sharing of resources so that IT departments get more out of their storage investment. Because we're using open system products instead of a propriety approach, the solutions we're providing now will become the core of the next generation of SAN applications enabling even more sweeping solutions, including serverless data transfer."

ADIC champions the cause of interoperable open-system network storage solutions through its active membership in industry organizations that include the Fibre Channel Industry Association (FCIA) and the Storage Networking Industry Association (SNIA). The company also supports several SAN partner initiatives including Computer Associates' Storage Area Network Integrated Technology Initiative (SANITI), Legato's Celestra Consortium, and VERITAS' Fibre Channel Storage Area Network initiative.

ADIC is offering its SAN backup solutions in conjunction with its value-added reseller channel. "Resellers need SAN partners that are committed to open systems, to sharing interoperability testing and certification knowledge, and to helping educate the channel in the new technology" commented Otis. "As one of the only solution suppliers with a heritage of channel sales, ADIC is in a unique position to help bring SAN technology to the end-user community through an expanding reseller partnership program."
