<<DSL Solution Supporting Advanced IP Applications The Interspeed DART's Integrated Switching, Routing, Subscriber Management and
VPN Capabilities Enable Service Providers To Address Fast-Growth,

Stand-Alone Professional Office Markets

N+I Booth # 4430

ATLANTA, Sept. 14 /PRNewswire/ -- Interspeed, Inc., a Brooktrout company (Nasdaq: BRKT), today at Networld+Interop introduced the Interspeed DART, the industry's first complete, low-density Digital Subscriber Line (DSL) solution that enables service providers to deliver high-speed Internet access and other advanced IP applications to the stand-alone professional office market.

The Interspeed DART is a single device solution that provides all of the central components required to offer in-building DSL services, including switching, Virtual Private Networks (VPN), WAN interfaces, CSU/DSU with T1 interface, as well as the industry's only complete routing and subscriber management services. By eliminating the need to purchase these components separately, Interspeed can save MTU service providers up to $15,000 per DSL platform while simultaneously taking the complexity out of installing and managing DSL networks.

In addition, the Interspeed DART allows carriers to support new types of advanced IP applications, including IP multicast (see related announcement today). Originally designed to support traditional Email and Web surfing applications, DSL networks are now being used for applications ranging from Internet-based conferencing and video on demand to streaming audio and video. Because of its integrated switching, routing and subscriber management capabilities, the Interspeed DART allows carriers to deliver both traditional and advanced IP applications using the same platform.

Along with new applications, the Interspeed DART also opens new market opportunities for service providers. Packing powerful communications capabilities in a minimal footprint, the Interspeed DART enables Internet Service Providers (ISPs), and Competitive Local Exchange Carriers (CLECs) to provide DSL services to small building environments that don't require the higher port count of the Interspeed 500 or 1000 and where space isn't available for large rack-mounted systems. Weighing less than 10 pounds, the Interspeed DART delivers eight ports of symmetric DSL (SDSL) and uses one port of T1 as a back-haul link for less than $10,000.

The capabilities, size and cost of the Interspeed DART also make it ideal for use in Remote Terminal (RT) applications. For example, ILECs and RBOCs can utilize the Interspeed DART in remote analog and digital loop carriers (DLCs) servicing local business needs for high-speed Internet access. Previously, the only alternative solution was low bandwidth ISDN and IDSL access or expensive T1/E1 service. "Interspeed is targeting a previously untapped market with the DART solution," said Laurie Falconer, DSL Analyst at TeleChoice, Inc. "Typically the cost structure involved in DSL deployments does not support provisioning DSL for small MTU offices. This product addresses the demand for affordable high speed services in this market segment."

An Interspeed DART can be placed inside a professional office, allowing service providers to quickly provision "instant DSL" services using the building's existing copper wiring. An office can benefit from dedicated, always-on, high-speed Internet access at speeds up to 2.3 Mbps for significantly less than the cost of a T1 line.

In addition, the Interspeed DART gives service providers significant future resource protection.

The products can be networked together, easily expanding the available port count. And as a carrier's DSL applications grow, Interspeed's product family can increase with them, from the low port count of the Interspeed DART to the high density Interspeed 1000. This scalability also enables service providers to leverage their existing investments in personnel training.

BridgeBand Communications (www.bridgeband.com), an ISP/CLEC in Bozeman, Mont., will deploy the Interspeed DART in several CO and MTU applications. BridgeBand will co-locate Interspeed's DARTs in U.S. West cross-connect boxes, allowing the CLEC to offer DSL services to professional offices located more than three miles from the central office. According to BridgeBand's president, Joe Long, "All of BridgeBand's new DSL services will be based on Interspeed's integrated product family, including the Interspeed DART. With its perfect combination of low port count and low cost, the Interspeed DART is the best possible solution for extending DSL beyond the central office. Given the size and cost issues, it would be virtually impossible for BridgeBand to co-locate any other type of equipment in cross-connect boxes." "Access to copper is no longer a requirement for service providers to take part in the bandwidth boom," said Steve Ide, president of Interspeed. "Small in-building applications not only have the wiring in place, but these business customers are clamoring for faster and cheaper Internet access. The Interspeed DART is the only solution delivering the robust performance and low price that makes DSL a viable option for small office applications. By dramatically reducing their total cost of ownership, the Interspeed DART enables ISPs and CLECs to generate significant revenue in this fast-growth market."

About Interspeed's Product Family

In addition to the Interspeed DART, the company's integrated DSLAR product family includes the Interspeed 1000 (designed for carrier-class, CO applications) and the Interspeed 500 (suited for small CO applications and large MTU or campus environment deployments). With the Interspeed DART, Interspeed is uniquely positioned to meet service providers' complete DSL access requirements, ranging from a small eight port MTU application to a large central office, 192 port deployment.

Similar to the Interspeed 1000 and Interspeed 500, the Interspeed DART delivers the following advanced capabilities: -- Speedview(TM), a powerful set of administration and management functions that makes installation of the Interspeed DART as simple as "plug and play." Speedview is a management interface that uses an embedded, secure http server that enables complete system management and configuration from a standard Web browser. A text-based command line interface is also available. The application conforms to the Simple Network Management Protocol (SNMP) to support dedicated network management software platforms.>>
