Latest Reports from Stanford Resources Show Growth is Hottest in Large-Size CRT and Flat Panel Monitor Markets Business/High Tech Editors SAN JOSE, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Sept. 14, 1999--According to Stanford Resources, Inc., the leading market research company specializing in the global electronic display industry, the most dramatic growth in the U.S. monitor market in 2Q99 occurred in the 19-inch CRT and 17- and 18-inch LCD monitor markets. This data comes from the company's second-quarter reports on the U.S. monitor markets: Flat Panel Monitrak(R) and Monitrak(R). The reports are the only quarterlies to cover the entire U.S. desktop monitor market on a model-by-model basis. Rhoda Alexander, Senior Market Analyst at Stanford Resources, states, "The market to watch in the near future will be the large-size CRT and flat panel monitor segments. We see many users trading in their 15-inch CRT monitors for 19-inch versions, without giving 17-inch units a thought. Vigorous growth is also predicted for 17- and 18-inch flat panel monitors through 2000." In 2Q99, Flat Panel Monitrak(R) showed that the value of the 17-inch flat panel monitors sold in 2Q99 to the U.S. market was approximately $20.7 million (9.3% of the total market value). The value of the 18-inch units was approximately $37.1 million (16.7% of the total market value). According to Monitrak(R), unit shipments of 19-inch monitors increased 16%, climbing from 559,105 units in 1Q99 to 648,373 units in 2Q99. Despite this unit increase, the 19-inch monitor market share increased only slightly, growing from 7.0% in 1Q99 to 7.7% in 2Q99. The average 19-inch monitor street price continues to erode, falling from $572 in 1Q99 to $535 in 2Q99. Other highlights from Flat Panel Monitrak(R) include the following: -- Total unit sales for the U.S. flat panel monitor market exceeded 155,000 units in 2Q99, a 33.6% increase over 1Q99 unit sales of approximately 116,000 units. -- Sales will increase to more than 204,000 units in 3Q99, climbing to 470,000 units in 2Q00. -- The total value of U.S. flat panel monitor sales in 2Q99 was approximately $222.1 million. -- The branded vendor leading in unit sales of flat panel monitors in 2Q99 was ViewSonic, with sales of 25,096 units (16.2% of the 2Q99 total).
