Card

Business Editors

NEWARK, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Sept. 14, 1999--Socket
Communications Inc. (OTC: Bulletin Board SCKT and SCKTW; Pacific Stock
Exchange SOK) today announced an agreement to provide Metricom,
Incorporated (NASDAQ: MCOM), a leading provider of mobile data
networking and technology, with Socket's plug-in cards for connecting
Metricom's wireless Ricochet data modems to Microsoft (NASDAQ: MSFT)
Windows CE operating system-based mobile computers.
Metricom will offer the Socket(R) Serial I/O Card as part of the
Data Connection Kit for the Ricochet SX Modem. The kit will make it
easier than ever for mobile professionals to attach a Ricochet SX
modem to any Windows CE-based Palm-size PC or Handheld PC in order use
the Ricochet wireless service to send and receive e-mail, browse the
web or access files from a corporate network.
Today Ricochet provides mobile access speeds up to 28.8 kbps,
about double the performance of cellular phones used as wireless
modems. Ricochet's network currently has over 29,000 subscribers and
offers service in the greater San Francisco Bay Area, Seattle, and
Washington, D.C. metropolitan areas; in select areas of New York City;
select corporate campuses; and at gate areas in 12 major airports
throughout the United States. The Company plans to begin offering 128
kbps mobile data service by the middle of next year, with about 40
major markets coming online by mid-2001.
Socket's Serial I/O Card is the world's first CompactFlash data
communications adapter. The card's Battery Friendly(TM) design
conserves the battery of its host computer and its CompactFlash form
factor allows the card to be plugged securely into any Windows
CE-based Palm-size PC or, via an adapter included in Metricom's kit,
into the PC Card slot of a Handheld PC. This universal compatibility
allows Metricom to offer a single-cable solution to the Windows CE
industry.
"Microsoft is pleased that Socket and Metricom are bringing users
of Windows CE-based devices a wireless access solution that is fast,
easy and affordable," said Jonathan Roberts, general manager of the
Productivity Appliance Division at Microsoft Corp. "Ricochet modems
and Socket plug-in cards are a great way for mobile professionals to
access their e-mail and Internet content anytime, anywhere, with a
Windows CE-based Palm-size PC or Handheld PC."
"Socket's Serial I/O Card enhances our ability to serve the
mobile professional market by providing a standard, field-proven
solution for attaching any Windows CE-based Palm-size PC or Handheld
PC to our Ricochet SX modem," said John Cornwell, Director of Business
Development for Metricom. "We believe that the Windows CE industry is
on the verge of rapid expansion and are pleased to be working with
Socket to strengthen our position in this area."
"We are excited to be working with Metricom in the area of
wireless data communications," said Peter Phillips, marketing director
for Socket Communications. "Metricom has a unique approach to
high-speed, wireless mobile data networking and their combination of
performance and affordability offers users of Windows CE a compelling
option for staying connected on the road."
