Qualcomm sees strong fourth quarter
Communications maker considers options for phone unit

SAN DIEGO (CBS.MW) -- Shares of Qualcomm shot 6 percent higher Tuesday morning after the company said it would meet or exceed fourth-quarter earnings estimates and that it is talking to other companies about ways to boost its phone business.




The San Diego-based digital wireless communications maker (QCOM: news, msgs) said demand for its code division multiple access chipsets and phones have been stronger in its fourth quarter vs. the third quarter. See press release.

Analysts surveyed by First Call expect the company to earn 88 cents per share in the fourth quarter.

Qualcomm shares jumped as much as 10 1/8 higher to 163 1/2, with 3.9 million shares changing hands.

Additionally, Qualcomm said its looking into "several strategic options for its terrestrial -based phone business" and that talks are underway with different companies. The company hopes to move the business to a manufacturer that will support its customers and employees along with other opportunities.

Qualcomm said it expects to reach a decision by the end of the calendar year. Meanwhile, it added that it's reducing costs which may result in a non-recurring charge to its earnings.
