Actually (sob) I sold Apple before the run from 60 to 75. Wife needed a kitchen. Hoping desperately for a pull back so I can dive in again. But, I did triple my money...not bad.

Digital - I think CPQ can utilize the DEC base to move toward a LE-centric world. Realistically, they are in the network business now. DEC, while it WAS a mainframe company, can essentially port over to a networked-centric model. From what I've been reading, that's kind've the direction CPQ has been taking it.
I'm no technician, so I don't want to get involved in a debate with anyone about how VAX isn't a server, or any technical nonsense. Again, I'm talking vision (ala LE) and I think CPQ has loads of it.

I suspect we'll be hearing more good things from CPQ over the next 6 months.

Point 4 - you're right, but only because the two abused their name by launching undesirable/unprofitable products. IF MSFT doesn't do the same (Encarta????), then they could avoid this fate.
