Thanks EL, CNBC Market Watch on Compaq at 11:34 am 9/14/99
"Consuelo: Compaq 's ceo says he wants a new look and some new functions for his company's pcs. And, another health-related web site will probably file for an ipo this week. Those are the top two items in today's "tech '99." Here's our technology reporter renay san miguel. Good morning. Renay: For most of this year compaq has been a ship without a rudder. The stock price has floundered, there are questions over direct versus indirect sales, and a ceo shakeup put michael capellas in the hot seat at the houston based pc company. But now it looks like capellas wants to make it clear to everyone he's at the helm, and he's got some new goals for compaq One of those goals, capellas told a news conference in Paris yesterday, is to build, "really cool stuff." By that capellas means compaq should start focusing on redesigning how its pcs and notebooks look, making them simpler to use, and adding some new functionality to them, like wireless capabilities. Capellas admitted that his company is working on some new partnerships to that end, but he wouldn't say who. He would say that he hopes to have those wireless alliances nailed down before the end of the year. The cynical among you might be thinking that capellas is trying to do his best steve jobs impression, but even compaq 's rival dell computer has gone on record saying apple's imac was a wake up call for the industry in terms of design. And if apple's new ibook portable with its wireless capabilities starts burning up the sales charts later this month and stealing more market share, look for other computer company ceo's to start talking up wireless like capellas is."
