KATAYAMA (voice-over): Two months before the holiday (19:03:40)
shopping (19:03:50) season begins, on-line retailers are getting ready for
a tidal wave of customers. Discount retailer Bluefly (Company: Bluefly Inc.;
Ticker: BFLY; URL: bluefly.com , which expects to boost
sales (19:04:00) tenfold, says it will quadruple the number of designer
brands (19:04:10) available and hasten deliveries.

JONATHAN MORRIS, EXEC. V.P., BLUEFLY.COM: From the fulfillment
(19:04:20) side, we've recently moved warehouses to a larger, more
sophisticatedfacility that will allow us to get the product out the door
accurately (19:04:30) and quicker than we have in (19:04:40) the past.

KATAYAMA: The research firm Jupiter Communications predicts on-
(19:04:50) line holiday sales will nearly double this year to $6 billion,
(19:05:00) accounting for 40 percent of the year's sales on the Internet.
Ten- (19:05:10) million new shoppers are expected.

KEN CASSAR, JUPITER COMMUNICATIONS: Back in 1997, people were
(19:05:20) buying largely socks and underwear on-line. In 1998, they
started tobuy khakis and Oxfords, and occasionally sweaters. In 1999, this
(19:05:30) trend will probably continue. People will start to buy more and
more (19:05:40) highly differentiated products.

KATAYAMA (on (19:05:50) camera): And that differentiated lineup
includes (19:06:00) home furnishings, the new entry that Web marketers
predict will be a (19:06:10) big hit. The upscale cookware retailer
Williams-Sonoma is expected to (19:06:20) unveil its new shops site in the
fall.

(voice-over): And America Online says (19:06:30) look for retailers
to (19:06:40) offer incentives, everything from discounts to free shipping.
ItsVirtual Mall will feature 3-D product demonstrations complete with
(19:06:50) sound.

On-line retailers will have to do more than that to keep (19:07:00)
consumers happy. Jupiter reports that customer satisfaction has (19:07:10)
declined from 88 percent last July to 61 percent this year. Retailers
(19:07:20) are betting that faster loading Web sites, quicker deliveries
andwider selection will help them hold on to customers (19:07:30) into the
new (19:07:40) millennium.
