Qualcomm Mulls Options On Land-Based Phone Business
SAN DIEGO (Reuters) - Wireless telecommunications equipment maker Qualcomm Inc. (Nasdaq:QCOM - news) said Tuesday it is considering ''several strategic options'' for its land-based phone business, citing increased competition, parts shortages and shrinking profit margins.

The company said in a statement that discussions were under way with several interested parties and that it hoped to enter into an agreement before the end of the calandar year.

Qualcomm also said it expects its earnings for the fiscal fourth quarter will meet or exceed analysts estimates of 87 cents a share.

The consensus estimate for the fiscal quarter ending Sept. 27 was 88 cents a share, as compiled by First Call/Thomson Financial.

Qualcomm earned 75 cents a share in the previous quarter and 27 cents a share in last year's fiscal fourth quarter.

The company added that it plans to reduce expenses further and take further steps to increase margins, which may result in a non-recurring charge to earnings.
