If you just blindly follow a theory 'cause some scientists say so...
That would be the opposite of the scientific method. Scientific theories are always under challenge. It is that type of double checking which gets "Cold Fusion" type of results exposed before anyone tries to use them as the basis of further research. The key is to pose a legitimate challenge, it's not sufficent to just say I don't believe it, you must look for the implications of the theory.

When Darwin proposed Natural Selection there were many challenges. Some were resolved with later discoveries (like continental drift), others required modifications (punctuated equilibrium which explains why species remain constant for long periods and change relatively suddenly). As time goes by, and discrepencies are resolved, and new discoveries fit just as the theory would predict, then the more trust you can place into a theory.

I agree, and I'm not blindly following evolution either. Much of what I post is devil's advocacy.

My belief is in evolution, but one guided by God. I just take an extremely parabolic view of Genesis.

What I was asking here is a question that has vexed me since I was a youth. Basically, my question has been, "Is God good and caring like the church teaches?"

There is significant evidence that the answer is no. But, since both good and caring are subjective ideas, can they be applied to God?

I don't see the evidence that God is good or caring. I do see that he had his son brutally tortured, taunted, stabbed and crucified. I also know that the bible teaches we were made in God's image. In addition, much of the bible devalues women (Lot offering his daughters for the crowd to rape, so as to spare his angelic visitors).

So, I was posing the a question that challenges the most basic foundation of Christianity, the one echoed by every Sunday school teacher since we were youthes. "God loves you".

How do others reconcile the fact that God allows and causes cruelty to humans, with him loving and caring for us?

do you not suppose, given an infinite universe that he is responsible for , that anything that truly offended god would have a hard time finding exsistence?
why are commandments needed? if it wasn't meant to be, would it occur?
could a "god" with infinite power, and infinite intellect, omnipresent and now here, could such a god actually command anything and NOT be obeyed?
this is aslo assuming god "needs" us. if he's so much more than i, what need has he of I. i cannnot notice bacteria on my hands, unless i cut myself and get infected. i can See ants, but even if a nation of ants told me they wanted to worship me
1-> would i understand them?
2-> assuming i did, what's the point?
3-> if it is out of fear, as most institutions (both religious and political) are, i want nothing of it. if it's to wish he a happy day, that can be done w/o worship. besides, i wouldn't Want to give them any ideas, as i have seen what atrocities humans are capable of when guided by "immortal law" and "religious justice" (and oxymoron, i'm sure)
