RESEARCH ALERT- Cabletron estimates, target raised

BOSTON, Sept 14 (Reuters) - SG Cowen analyst Chris Stix said Tuesday he raised his 2001 earnings and revenue estimates for Cabletron Systems Inc. (NYSE:CS - news), and upped the price target to $25-$30 from $15-$20.

-- Stix made his comments in a report following a presentation on Monday made by Cabletron's Chairman, President and Chief Executive Piyush Patel at the SG Cowen Technology Conference in Boston.

-- Cabletron shares were up 9/16 at 18-7/8 on the New York Stock Exchange.

-- Stix raised his 2001 EPS estimates to $0.85 from $0.65. He also raised revenue estimates for 2001 to $1.81 billion from $1.65 billion.

-- In his report, Stix said he expects strong new product flows at the networking company. However, he said Cabletron's history of execution miscues ``suggests that the story is not without risk.'

-- He said he expects the company to concentrate on high growth businesses, such as layer 3 switching, digital subscriber line (DSL) router products and its Spectrum network management platform.

-- ``We expect the company to focus on these products (along with services) moving forward, with possible cuts in lower growth businesses,' Stix said. ``We also feel that the company may spin out or sell some of its high growth businesses to unlock value.'
