Qualcomm to sell handsets unit

SAN DIEGO—Qualcomm Inc. said discussions are under way with a
number of companies willing to purchase its Code Division Multiple Access
handset division.

‘‘With increased competition, parts shortages and industry consolidation
reducing margins in consumer products, Qualcomm desires to transition the
business to a manufacturer that will support its customer base and
employees while providing economies of scale, a strong purchasing base and
other operating efficiencies,'' Qualcomm said in a statement after months of
denying speculation that it was selling off its handset business.

Analysts have known for months Motorola Inc. and Siemens Wireless
Terminals had been in discussions with Qualcomm.
