This explains why members of species are all similar at any given moment. It is the mixing of genes through unrelated partners and the fixing of genes through closer related partners which keeps the species as a whole from drifting in characteristics over many generations. The slow drift was the pattern that Darwin expected and the reason that he and others at the time looked for "missing link" fossils which would illustrate a slow progression over time. This is one of those areas where Darwin was just half right.
