Bernard,

<You may not have realized it, but in
98, Level One bought a company called Acclaim Communications
whose founder had founded earlier Kaplana. Acclaim
was focusing on layer 3 and 4 chips. The new INTC
processors originate from this acquisition, and from
the acquisition of Softcom.>

As far as I can tell, quite a few Acclaim guys including the the Kalpana founder and the director of design have jumped ship. Rumor mill says the rest of the key folks will not stick around too long.

Level One itself is completely out of depth outside PHY chips and even there has lost almost all the major sockets they had about a year back. They are second to Broadcomm now but a pretty distant second and slipping further.

<PMCS has a very strong position in the ATM chip
segment, but its focus appears narrower. >

IMHO, Brodcomm is mostly a CPE/Enterprise play and PMCS is a lot more of a Network play. I am sure they will collide in a few places as time goes by currently PMCS and BRCM are in quite different market segments except for a possible minor overlap on the LAN side.

<So, my bet
would be BRCM versus INTC. >

In the LAN space - possible. Assuming Acclaim/Level One do not slip any further - Intel may become a force. But, it is not apparent to me that it is a slam dunk and I see a lot of hungry players out there - MMCN, LU, LSI, GALT, PMCS (as they get into this market) to name a few.

Chuck

<The players will be BRCM and INTC.>

They will certainly be players (aren't they always?), but my votes go to the new guys (C-Port, Abrizio, Siara, SiTera, Growth Networks, Agere, T-Sqware, Solidum, the Ultrasparc design team's new company,....). They have great technology talent, lots of money, and no installed base to constrain their design choices or business model strategies.
