I agree with this wholeheartedly. Even a single parent needs to show interests in a child's school work. They must attend conferences with teachers, make sure the home work is done and encourage the child to do his best.

Now the problem is how do we get uninterested parents to become interested.

But you should not visit the sins of the parents on the children.

This is not "my" issue. My own children are long out of school, and my grandkids are doing fine where they are (in public school).

Yet I do have a sort of opinion/feeling on this general subject.

In my considered opinion/feeling, it is precisely the children who have awful home backgrounds that need the most help in school. And it is in society's interest to provide them with it, even -- rather, especially --when the parents are unable/unwilling to (and can't tell the difference between a voucher and a roll of toilet paper). Better to spend more on a public school, bring in the best teachers (and give them high salaries), extend the school day, whatever is necessary, than to pour even more money into the construction of yet one more jail...
