That is possible, and I think that Michael intended the original comment to be somewhat tongue in cheek. I, by the way, do not know enough who actually went into the field to say much about their personal lives, but I did hear the admission of personal motives for majoring as an undergraduate with startling frequency.....And it is true that some of the pioneers, like Freud and Jung, were a bit odd....
