iMode growth story part III ( I'm not much promoting any stock! This is just very interesting... I don't know do they use MSFT's or SUN's servers to build this etc. I'm no NTT or Nokia employee. ) Carriers may have to rethink their lukewarm approach to data services. NTT DoCoMo's 'iMode' Mobile Phone Subscribers Reach 1 Million August 18, 1999 (TOKYO) -- The number of subscribers of NTT Mobile Communications Network Inc.'s "iMode"-compliant mobile phones rose above 1 million as of Aug. 8. The "iMode" service, offered by NTT Mobile Communications Network (NTT DoCoMo) since Feb. 22, 1999, features text-based data communications for mobile phones. The number of subscribers increased monthly from 139,000 at the end of April to 258,000 at the end of May and 523,000 at the end of June. Seeing the brisk sales of this service, NTT DoCoMo revised the initial estimate of the number of subscribers for this year upward from 3 million to 4 million. Each of the iMode services is steadily growing. For example, "mobile banking," one major feature of the iMode services, continues to attract users. Sanwa Bank Ltd. has already gained more than 10,000 users for its balance inquiries and transfer services. Kinokuniya Co., Ltd., one of Japan's large book shops, gained more than 10 percent of the new members of its membership electronic shop, "BookWeb," via iMode. In a field of fee-based contents distribution service, Bandai Co., Ltd. gained as many as 125,000 users for its character image distribution service, offered for a 100-yen monthly charge. (114.83 yen = US$1) There are 122 content providers that allow customers to use services from the menu screen, prepared by NTT DoCoMo, of an iMode terminal. The company plans to triple the number of banks that offer mobile banking using iMode from the current 45 banks by the middle of September. (Nikkei NetBusiness) ((Tear Out The New Qualcomm - board))
