Netscape Certificates and Smart Cards Create Legally-Binding XML in Free Addition to
UWI.Com's InternetForms

BusinessWire, Thursday, September 16, 1999 at 09:08

SAN FRANCISCO--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Sept. 16, 1999--

UWI.Com Supports Signing Solutions from Every Major Vendor, Including
First XML Digital Signature Solution Interoperable with Netscape
Products
Hot on the heels of a CSC study that put secure e-commerce documents at the top of the
CIO's priority list, UWI.Com today announced a free addition to its InternetForms Commerce System
(ICS)(TM) that enables enterprise users to securely sign XML e-commerce documents using smart
cards and Netscape(R) (NYSE:AOL) digital certificates.
Now organizations can combine the security features of smart cards with Netscape's Digital
Certificate Management System(R) to digitally sign UWI.Com's secure, legally-binding
InternetForms(TM). This announcement complements UWI.Com's April release of the first third-party
support worldwide for Netscape certificates, and continues the company's leadership in supporting
signing solutions from every major digital security vendor.
"No other forms company can provide the level of security, as well as securing components of
the form, that UWI.Com can," said David Yockelson, vice president and director of META group.
ICS creates digital records that are legally-binding, which allows organizations to completely
remove their dependence on paper in internal and external e-commerce transactions. InternetForms
are providing critical digital records in government and private sector enterprises, including the IRS,
Office of the Secretary of Defense, Allina Health System, and RE/MAX. Smart cards, such as
Datakey's SignaSURE smart cards, are key to eliminating the threat of impersonation. They allow
users to carry their digital signing identities with them at all times on a card that resembles a credit
card, instead of leaving them in their computers where they are more susceptible to security
compromise.
"Smart cards provide mobility, portability, and flexibility because a card is a trusted container
that moves around with a person," said Eric Jordan, president and CEO of UWI.Com. "With smart
card support for Netscape certificates in InternetForms Commerce System, employees of
organizations using Netscape's security system can now access and file XML documents securely
from hotels, home, and the work environment."
InternetForms Commerce System provides the most options in the industry for creating
verifiable records through digital signatures, including the first-ever third-party support for Netscape
signatures, and support for Microsoft CryptoAPI, Entrust, and PenOp signatures. Through
partnerships with VeriSign, Datakey, Entrust, Netscape, PenOp, GTE CyberTrust, and Digital
Signature Trust, UWI.Com offers more methods for securely removing paper from business processes
than any other vendor.
Over the past year, UWI.Com has set the standard for legally-binding XML documents. It
introduced the industry to the concepts of transaction non-repudiation through the encapsulation of
digitally signed data and presentation in a single file for archiving and later verification. This
ground-breaking approach to secure XML documents has been validated by leading industry analysts,
including Meta Group, Giga Information Group, and Cohasset Associates. UWI.Com co-authored, with
Tim Bray, co-editor of the XML specification, Extensible Forms Description Language (XFDL), the first
XML syntax for legally-binding Internet Forms. XFDL has been submitted to the World Wide Web
Consortium as an Internet standard. UWI.Com was also the first company to implement a syntax for
digitally signed XML, and continues to advise and participate in the W3C's XML Signature working
group. Earlier this year, UWI.Com became the first company to offer third-party support for Netscape
signatures.
