"new momentum stocks" are, yes, you guessed it, semi's. Let's have a hand for the stair case workers.Remember our motto; "We are nothing without them". Besides, will need funds to rebuild my SC beach house after hurricane Floyd. NEW YORK (Dow Jones)--Semiconductor stocks surged Tuesday even as many other stocks declined, continuing a wild month for chip companies. Good news has been coming out of the sector for weeks as prices for commodity-like memory chips rose and the computer market entered its busiest season. Only last week, National Semiconductor Corp. (NSM) surprised investors by reporting an unexpected fiscal first-quarter profit. Shares of Micron Technology Inc. (MU), the last of the big U.S. manufacturers of dynamic random access memory chips, or DRAMs, soared 7 1/8, or 9.4%, to 82 7/8 Tuesday. That helped take the Philadelphia Semiconductor Sector Index, or SOX, as high as 575.66, past the previous all-time record of 573.76. Prices for DRAMs, the most high-volume semiconductors found in a PC, continue to rise. The spot price of a 64-meagabit DRAM chip rose to $14.50 Monday, said Brown Brothers Harriman & Co. analyst Bill Milton. That compares with about $11 a week ago and $7.30 in mid-August. "This is the strongest period seasonally for demand," Milton said. But he said the memory chip market is more fragmented now as more 128-megabit DRAMs are produced. Intel Corp. (INTC) was the most heavily-traded stock on Nasdaq, gaining 1 1/8, or 1.3%, to 85 1/8 on volume of 15.6 million shares. That's still below average daily turnover of 23 million. Shares of Maxim Integrated Products Inc. (MXIM) rose 3 15/16, or 5.6%, to 73 13/16. Analog Devices Inc. (ADI) gained 4 5/16, or 8%, to 58 5/16. Linear Technology Corp. (LLTC) rose 4 1/8, or 6.5%, to 67 11/16. Broadcom Corp. (BRCM) added 6 3/16,, or 5.7%, to 115 1/2. And Texas Instruments Inc. (TXN) rose 3 7/8, or 4.4%, to 92 7/8. Chip equipment makers were up, too. Applied Materials Inc. (AMAT) rose 5 13/16, or 7.7%, to 81 7/8. And Novellus Systems Inc. (NVLS) rose 5, or 8.1%, to 65 15/16. The SOX was recently up 26.53 at 572.64. The Nasdaq Composite Index rose 22 to 2867, but the Dow Jones Industrial Average fell 94 to 10936. "In a shaky market, there's a move to find new momentum stocks," Milton said, referring to chip shares.
