Ish,

I've consulted with a couple of people that know something about this, and apparently while it's more rare for cats, they seem to do better than the dogs with the surgery. The thing is that it's been over 3 weeks since he injured himself, so the surgery might be a little more difficult due to scarring and inflamation. :(
