I'm as likely as anyone to make fun of MSFT products, and
I don't like the company, but I have quite a few friends
up there and pretty much everyone I know around here
knows several very good people that MSFT got in the last
3-4 years. As one friend said, "That giant sucking sound
you hear is MicroSoft taking talent out of the valley."

I think that MSFT is probably in for a bumpy ride for a
while, but dismissing them would be a big mistake. Linux
(which appears to have a chance of becoming real, to my
delight) exists because a smart kid got tired of waiting
for "the hurd" to do something about the GNU O/S. MSFT
has a lot of smart people that aren't kids anymore, and
I can tell you from personal experience that a fairly
small team of smart people can turn things around even
for a big company.
