would love someone else's view....

I sold my Q position a couple of weeks back, but I was looking for an opportunity to reenter. Yesterday I was tempted. Today, after the announcement of the impending sale of the handset division, I no longer am.

I don't think that any company can attain and maintain huge market capitalization on technology patents and ASIC design expertise alone. Q's decision to essentially confine itself to design boutique activities, limit its future growth prospects IMHO. Lucrative intellectual property, such as that owned by Q, is always under relentless attack not only from the multitudes of hungry competitors, but also from national governments who can legislate against the IP holder (e.g. China).

slacker, re: "I really dont have much knowledge of Intel and would love someone else's view...."
Highly recommend "Inside Intel" which ought to be in paperback by now--maybe 4/5 years old. This is no "puff piece", the mighty INTC didn't get to the top of the heap playing paddy-cake. Some very negative revelations.
OTOH, I think your take is absolutely right: they are premiere silicon shapers [manufacturers]. They "live" right at the nexus of IPRs and the real world. Which is why I'm less concerned about industrial espionage than most: it's one thing to have the blueprints, the trick is building the damn things. You guys know how much I love BatWing but even I have to admit they've pulled off some really neat engineering tricks over the years: if MOT can't build these little CDMA ASIC critters, they must be a real bear.
No worries about the Chinese, Diamond H. They're just playing a little post New Zealand poker: no WTO guest card so they'll raise hell and not let any technology inside the Great Wall for a month or two, or until it's their turn to ante, whichever comes first. SM
