Credit Suisse First Boston's Lu on DRAM Industry: Comment

Taipei, Sept. 15 (Bloomberg) -- Andrew Lu, a senior semiconductor analyst with Credit Suisse First Boston in Taipei, comments on the prospects of dynamic random access memory chips: ''Prices of the 64 megabit DRAM chips have surged in the past few weeks. Yesterday's close of $15 was its highest level since 1998. We're upgrading our forecasts on DRAM makers' profit. ''The next thing to watch is whether the prices can trade above $8 into year 2000. If so, most DRAM companies will post explosive earnings growth because their costs average only $5.

Prices of DRAM -- mostly used in personal computers -- are expected by some analysts to fall to NT$10 as soon as November as the computer industry moves to the slow season. An upgrade in technology also helps bring down costs, lowering the prices. ''We expect more upside in DRAM stocks. Their earnings momentum is increasing strongly.''

Lu has a ''buy'' on Winbond Electronics Corp., Pro Mos Technologies Inc. and Powerchip Semiconductor Corp.

Skeeter, but we did see $85, if for just a "fleeting moment". (G).
