Newton's theory of gravitation
This is an embarrassment, an inconsistancy, Newton's work on gravitation was accepted so completely as to be a law, only the tag name of "theory of gravitation" was applied early on and became a part of the scientific lexicon. It, and Einstein's modifications, are now usually referred to as the "law of gravity" only because there is so much confusion over what a theory really is.
