~Smart$, when you say, "it's difficult to convey the sense that an open is phoney", I suspect that this is an example of a professional's "gut feel". I.e., you have the ability to pick up a bunch of tiny cues (from indicators, tape reading, etc.) and come to a correct conclusion in a non-linear way. I think that we (most of us) tend to look for the right "formula" to analyze a trading situation. It would be great if you could clearly describe this, but it may be impossible to describe the non-linear aspect. Thanks for all of the great posts! Regards, Dan.
